People always ask us how we make our JibJab videos. The release of our latest election video felt like a great opportunity to describe the process from soup to nuts! There is also a TON of writing, design, music and artwork created during the process that never sees the light of day. Now, thanks to the wonders of blogging, we can give you, our beloved audience, a sneaky peeky!
There are 3 basic phases to creating a JibJab that we will go through step by step…
– Pre-production: Coming up with the idea, writing the lyrics and laying the ground work
– Production: Doing the actual designing and animating
– Post Production: All the stuff to get it ready to share

Guys, this year is great except…
When recording the lyrics, you sorta flubbed and got parts of it lost in the music mix. Also it’s a little too fast, and I’m missing key words that make it funny.
On a good video with original lyrics, you should be able to close your eyes and understand what’s being said, with 100% clarity.
In this case, if it weren’t for the subtitles, I’d be lost in several places. Which makes it impossible for a radio station or radio newscast to play the audio track for more exposure.
Great video! Previous commenter DukeAndBanner must be a perfectionist because the lyrics, speed, etc, all sound fine. The subtitles aren’t really necessary.
I had no idea you had hit the “big time” until I was cruising through all the videos and found the media coverage. I have had so much fun with the “Starring You” and we are using some JibJab’s at a big employee conference next week with all the Director’s in as the stars to lighten everyone up. You have the best job in the world! I love you guys!
You were far more critical of McCain than Obama. I didn’t see any jabs at Obama except the word Changing Change. It made fun of McCain and Hillary that’s about it. Too bad, I was hoping JibJab would balance both sides. Looks like JibJab is a bit enamored over Obama just like the news media.

Love the stuff!! The animation is solid and smoooooth! Do you primarily animate in Flash? I saw hints of After FX and maybe some 3d software? Do you recommend any sites or books for animation?
