This shot re-used some assets that we modified from a previous short. (You can see the truck used to say FBI, and we changed it for the NSA!) The turnaround on our Year in Review shorts is always super tight, so any time we can cut down on work by reusing assets helps us out. Our designers, Nik and Eusong completed the BG and characters, and passed it off to one of our animators, Lauren. After doing a first pass, director Jeff wanted the scene to look busier, so Lauren whipped up some satellite assets and blinking lights for the van.
