We’ve been trying to keep sane with the obscene amount of Halloween and Christmas materials we’re prepping for our yearly holiday onslaught. Part of the stress release has been aided by the help of Buckyballs, which we’ve all been enthralled with this week and can’t help but recommend you buy. Also on the list is the Fatbooth app for iPhone, which has plumped up a good many of us in the last few days. So if you ever wondered to yourself “how would JibJab kill some time in a situation like this”, you now have the answer.

The Starring You Progress Chart
Our studio got a new addition this week in the form of an informative whiteboard that will serve as a companion to our That’s a Wrap Chart. With Starring You and animated videos, we take so many steps from project start to published art, it can be a chore just to figure out where we stand progress wise at any given point in the month. Now, as we kill each task off we can mark it as done with these little JibJab skull sticky squares that Trish designed. This big bad board is going to keep us all on the same page as we juggle a dozen projects at once.
What are these projects that we’ve progressed so far on? We’re not going to say, you’ll just have to stay tuned.

We’re MIXX Award Finalists!
Cool, we’re up for an award! JibJab and Office Max (as well as Elm Public Relations and Grand Central Marketing) are finalists for a 2010 MIXX award in the “Viral Category”. The iab, or Interactive Advertising Bureau puts on an award show every year, describing it as “the only interactive awards competition judged by an all-star panel of advertising agency executives who create campaigns for the world’s most powerful brands, marketers with direct control over many of the largest advertising budgets in the world and major media company leaders.”
Along with the best of the interactive web and it looks like geek-goddess Olivia Munn is hosting this year’s event! While we geek out, check the MIXX awards site and see a full list of finalists.

Evan’s Ukulele Serenades
Lately Evan has taken up the Ukulele, keeping it at hand pretty much all day long. As he checks in on our animators, you can hear him coming down the hall with a pleasant strum, the echos in our quiet studio are quite calming while we manage our extremely tight holiday schedule over the next few months. Evan’s even been known to break into song, here we present spy footage as he serenades a cover of Elvis Prestley’s Suspicious Minds to Mike, our resident Elvis expert (and puppet maker). Note the fast work hiding the camera after his song, leaving Evan none-the-wiser, muahaha.

CNR on Tour
Weird Al‘s summer tour wrapped up this weekend after 55 shows. At all of those shows? Some rockin’ JibJab animation! Rainn Wilson (you know, Dwight from The Office) nabbed this shot of Al rocking CNR on stage with a heavy dose of JibJab right behind him. With the tour over, Al heads to the studio to work on his new full album. We can’t wait!

Lunch is on… the Interns?
After a nice long summer of animation (not to mention All Nighters and Techno Jumping) our interns are bidding us farewell today. We had a few surprises in store for them upon their departure, school supplies, toilet paper, wallets with our pictures in them and some framed certificates.
We certainly weren’t expecting to get anything in return, until they left this message in our inboxes…
- Hello Jib Jab! In honor of Krishna’s birthday/our last day at this wonderful establishment we have lunch covered. So don’t EAT! We will have food at like 1pm or so! – JibJab Interns
The interns have been known to chug cake, so we were slightly hesitant about the food. To our surprise, the fare was succulent, vegetarian approved Indian food along with some healthy-for-everyone strawberry juice!
You guys! The food was delicious and we’re gonna miss our summer crew. Dylan, Ryan, Skyler, Tyler (yes they all had “y”s in their names)… we salute you.

Birthday Balloon Bloopers
We’ve launched a snappy new 9 second eCard today that features a bunch of balloons!
Vodpod videos no longer available.
Though it may be short, you have no idea how much work went into making the card you see above. It all started when Evan wrote a zippy little song about birthday balloons, one of the most iconic Birthday images that we’ve yet to touch upon. After Ev recorded a scratch track of it, long time JibJab collaborator Steffon Moody punched the song up and performed it, then Evan went back and added some balloon popping noises.
The first idea we had to bring the short to reality was to have the balloon singing after being released by it’s owner. It would end in a pop as a bird swooped by.
This idea made it as far as an animatic, but it was a little complicated to make traveling through the air look right.
Anthony and Kevin tried using one of our puppets, taking the balloons outside to our parking lot. The result was just awkward, just watch them try to get that puppet to pop the balloon.
Tossing the idea of puppets, we took to our studio to shoot some balloons against backdrops. Only one problem, our studio lights shone brightly against the reflective balloons, making the messy half of our studio visible. We would have to build a white wall of sheets just to block the lights and mess out, so it was on to plan C.
Taking the balloons out into the wild, we travelled to Topanga Canyon to capture some of Southern California’s beautiful natural landscapes. Unfortunately, we hadn’t counted on Southern California’s winds. We went to four different locations and came up with swift breezes every time.
When the wind DID die down, we realized we had no good way to pop balloons that were hanging high in the sky. That’s Kevin poking them with a stick.
We had given it our all, and when something can’t be shot in the physical world, it’s time to face the facts and go with animation. So Kevin drew up some funny faces and animated it. It did the trick!
And that, dear JibJabbers, is how you make a simple, 9 second birthday balloon eCard. Stupid nature. Send it by clicking here!

Operatic eCards are Here!
Two new Operatic eCards were launched today, one for Birthdays and another as an Apology eCard! We had an honest-to-goodness opera singer (Christopher Macchino) record the vocals for this one, and it took the eCard to the next level, making it so catchy that we’ve all had “The Barber of Seville” stuck in our heads for the past few weeks. Mike and Kevin matched the epic soundtrack with an epic visual, bringing a new puppet to life in our studio. Complete with a mustache and eyebrows made of real hair, our opera man was so complex, he took three hands to operate! Check out more behind the scenes photos on Facebook, to get a good appreciation for the puppet you’ll be sending as an apology or a birthday wish!

At Long Last… Search Comes to JibJab!
It was at the top of our most wanted list. It was at the top of your most wanted list. As our library has grown to over a thousand pieces of content, having search functionality has been both a no-brainer and major technical challenge to us, especially as we have wanted to present our users with a very visual, accurate and stylized search.
Now thanks to Google and their amazing Google Site Search tool, search has finally become a reality on the site! From here on out, you can find the relevant content with speed and ease, while we get to stylize the results to fit the feel of our site. Learn more about how it all works over on Google’s blog or via a guest post from our developers. Then make sure to check out our site to see our new footer/header, try out our new video player and give search a whirl!

From 2005: Looking Back on Bud
JibJab is and has always been a little obsessed with beer. Take 2005 for instance, when we teamed up with Budweiser to animate their infamous Clydesdale and Lizard mascots for a “ditch the hard stuff, go with beer” campaign. It put us in the studio with live chameleons, super soakers and… well, free beer! We were pretty much living the dream.
While digging through the archives for pictures, we wayback machined ourselves so that you can relive JibJab.com circa 2005. Searching through those old files also revealed a hilarious website that was started by a blogger who insisted that the “blogging community” was “outraged” by our ads, going as far as to make a song blasting us for our misdeeds! Truly hilarious. -
JibJab <3s Star Wars Uncut
Annelise Pruitt and Casey Pugh, the masterminds behind the Star Wars Uncut project, stopped by the studio today! We showed them our stuff, so now we’re showing you their stuff… an ingenious collaboration project that tapped fans to recreate the entirety of Star Wars: A New Hope, second by second. Based out of New York, they’re in town to potentially pick up an interactive Emmy this weekend for their ground breaking work. Personally, we think they’re a shoe in, just look how much praise they’ve nabbed this week! Go ahead and watch Star Wars Uncut… but beware, it will probably eat up a solid chunk of your free time.
