Stick Your Face In It!

  • Star Spangled Rock!

Our new Fourth of July video is an homage to the great American rock stars of the 60s and 70s. With groovy guitar playing and Woodstock-appropriate apparel, this piece has us ready to rock out with our patriotism out! But before we do that, here’s a quick peek at how Anthony and Jeff filmed those “point of view” shots in the video.

No fancy camera rigging here! All it took was some cloth and a whole lotta gaffer’s tape. Oh, and we had to ask Jeff to rock a little less harder than usual for these shots.

See if you can spot all the point of view scenes in Star Spangled Rock!

  • Take Your Dog To Work Day!

Check out some of the cute pups that get to spend the day in the office!

For some, it is the greatest day of the year, others wish it is take your cat to work day.  Like Glennie, who claims her cat Yoda looks like a dog in a bandana.

We also missed Dan’s daredevil dog who recent broke her leg and is in surgery today! Get well Paige!

Did your company participate in Take Your Dog to Work Day?

  • Volunteer Day!

Last Saturday some of the JibJab team took time out of their Saturday afternoon to volunteer at the Bresee Foundation, a nonprofit after-school program serving low-income youth in central Los Angeles.  Our mission was to help clean up the garden to create a cleaner, safer, and prepared for planting area!

We had a great time mulching, trimming & weeding.  Bennett even planted Kale in our newly made bed.

Check out our Facebook album for more pictures! You can learn more about the Bresse Foundation & the good work they do on their blog: www.breseecommunitynews.com.

  • Big Daddy Dynamite

We’ve been jonesing over our latest 1970s-inspired Father’s Day eCard. This Blaxploitation parody had us laughing throughout the whole production process, even back when the video was nothing but a series of video clips with grainy voiceover. Check out this early version of Big Daddy Dynamite, complete with empty scenes and a temporary voice track, courtesy of our writer, Andy.

This is a common step when we use old footage to piece together an eCard. We go through hours and hours of movies looking for scenes that we can write a few gags around. We loosely assemble those scenes, leaving gaps for possible future ideas, and edit it with a temporary voice track. Finally, we fill out the piece by keeping the best gags and trimming out the weaker ones, leaving us with a pretty funkadelic old-school eCard!

    Can ya dig it?

  • Run Cycles

There are only a couple scenes in Take Me Out to the Ball Game where the main characters are actually running. In a 1.25 minute-long video with 22 scenes, you’d think a few seconds of running wouldn’t garner much attention from our animators. Not so! We spent a good amount of time doing test after test of different running styles, or “run cycles” as our artists called them, that we could use for the main characters. Check out these two different run cycles that we played around with in the early stages of animation:

Not only was it helpful to create these tests for running purposes, but it helped us get a sense of the artistic style we were going for. These run cycles have a more painterly look to them, whereas our final video ended up being in the classic JibJab collage style. Though none of these tests were used in the final product, they were incredibly helpful, and we like to keep them around as possible reference for future projects.

  • How-to Post to Facebook

Did you know there are a couple ways to share JibJab eCards and Starring You videos on Facebook? Here’s how!

A couple of years ago, we made it really easy for Facebook users to create and share from the JibJab site with Facebook Connect.  You should probably connect your JibJab account via Facebook for a great experience with these three easy steps:

    1. Click “Login with Facebook” in the upper right hand corner of the page

    2. After signing into your Facebook account press “Allow”

    3. And tada you are Facebook Connected!  You can even sign up for our FREE Birthday Alert service right there!

HOWEVER, you may prefer not to connect with Facebook and to copy and paste the URL link of your eCards directly to your friend’s Facebook wall.  If this is your preference follow these four steps:

    1. Copy the URL (located at the bottom of the page)

    2. Go to your friend’s Wall & paste the URL in the “Post” section.

    3. Delete the URL & write your own message…

    4. Then hit “Share”!

Remember, if you have any trouble, you can always leave us a comment here or email us at help[at]jibjab[dot]net.

  • How’d We Do That??

If you’ve made our Take Me Out to the Ball Game video more than once, chances are by now you’ve noticed that all 30 videos are actually the same.  The only difference is the uniforms, logos and colors that are unique to each team. Sounds like a small difference, but this became our biggest challenge when we began the project. How could we easily create 30 videos with interchangeable elements? For starters, we needed to be extremely organized!

Each piece of our characters’ costumes had to reference a piece of art stored in a totally different place. This may not sound too difficult, but when you figure hats, shirts, belts and even socks that had to change colors, it made for some very hairy file management.

Once the animation was approved and ready to be rendered, each scene was compiled into a final project that would render all 22 shots with a single mouse click. Once the entire video was done for a single team, all of the assets would be swapped out and updated, then the project was rendered all over again to generate the same video, but with different uniforms!

Did we lose you? Don’t worry, it took us a few tries to wrap our heads around this process, but after doing it 30 times we now have it down to a smooth science!

  • M-L-B-eautiful Designs!

Let’s take a moment to touch base with our artists (pun intended). In order to make sure they had the right look for each of our 30 Major League Baseball teams, they had to spend weeks poring over logo designs, team colors and uniforms. The next step was sketching a first draft of the main characters. At the time, we thought maybe the video would be from the point of view of the average baseball fan, so Romney pitched these awesome designs to us first:

By the time the production rounded second base, the “average baseball fan” characters were outta the game! The main characters were changed to ball players, and our artists pitched new character designs. The result? A home run!

  • Take Me Out to the Ball Game!

When we sat down during the early stages of our Take Me Out to the Ball Game planning, we knew we wanted the song to stay true to Jack Norworth’s 1908 classic. We kept the first verse exactly the same, but decided to put a little twist on the second by including more modern things that we associate with baseball games, like foam fingers, nachos and the JumboTron. Once the lyrics were written, Evan and Gregg hopped in the sound booth to record. Check out this early version of the song:

Next, we hired two talented singers, Allie Feder and Gabriel Mann, and one very talented composer, John Frizzell, to record the final track that we would use for our video. Don’t get us wrong, we love the brothers’ voices, but we sure were excited to hear the new polished version! Check out their track below along with an early animatic:

  • JIBJAB: LAB – SUCCESS!

JibJab is an awesome place to work – not only because of the recent installment of a free soda machine or the fact our laundry gets clean every week, but because we are allowed to extend our creative minds.   Last week the executive team surprised us with a new initiative they like to call JIBJAB: LAB.  In this exercise, we were allowed two days to create a project of our liking and present what we came up with to the entire team.

With the overwhelming amount of talent we have here at JibJab it is probably no surprise the two-day innovation-fest was an incredible success. It would be impossible to share all of the amazing projects, but take a look below.

Bennett figured out a way to take a picture of someone from their iPhone & directly insert it into a JibJab postable, then display online: Instajab.

Cat lovers Glennie and Nicole created an entire JibJab page dedicated to cats – “Starring Mew”.  It even included a live Twitter stream using the hashtag #jibjabcats.

Dave and Robbie worked overtime on their project & completed a heavy metal re-make of the now infamous YouTube video “Friday” by Rebecca Black.  When we say heavy metal, we mean heavy metal – as we were watching the video one of the office speakers blew out! They recorded the track and made the video out of paper cut out puppets.  Check it out here.

It wouldn’t have been a JIBJAB: LAB without some puppet making – both Mike and Amy made characters!

All in all it was a great experience! Some people even stepped out of their comfort zone and created something they had never done before, leaving the entire team very impressed. So now the cobwebs are dusted out of our brains and we are back to working hard to bring our creativity and innovation to you!

  • JibJab Workout!

We’ve blogged bragged about our long standing tradition of Wagon Wednesday, when each week a treat filled wagon brightens up our day giving us energy & sugar highs, but we recently have become inspired frightened into beginning a new tradition – the JibJab Workout!

Our moves during this quick 10-minute break to stretch our legs aren’t nearly as good as the ones in our newest Spandexed Starring You video, Jazzercise, nor do they take the cake to the Let’s Get Physical Starring You video, but hey, they get the blood flowing!

Comment below & let us know your favorite stretches so we can try them out!

  • Mom Rap – Behind the Scenes!

It takes a lot to to be a rappin’ mom: fresh lyrics, flawless moves and of course – fabulous outfits! For our Mom Rap video, the director called for plenty of outfit changes to help convey the life of a busy (yet stylish!) mom.

Here’s Lauren looking fierce in her first two costumes :

Click through the photos in our Facebook album to see what else Lauren wore! You’ll also get a peek at how we filmed a few scenes, including this macaroni toss:

  • Meme Milano

Yesterday JibJab was forced to say goodbye to Dan Milano.  Dan has been the writer, funny-man and all around keeper of this very blog, so readers, he is of note to you as well!   He has packed up and is moving all the way across the country to NYC.  Dan has definitely left his mark at JibJab – when he wasn’t programming the front page, writing for the blog, posting on Facebook, Twitter, Daily Motion, YouTube or writing emails announcing new Starring You! videos, birthday alert fun facts, he also, hiccuped once a day & wrote some great sendables like this one & this one!

On top of all that Dan was our resident internet king.  If you’ve ever seen something viral/cool on the internet, chances are Dan saw it first. And so as a token of appreciation, Jeff thought it would be fun if some of us created some animated GIF’s for Dan… a sort of ‘Going Away GIF’.  So we did just that – we mimicked our favorite internet meme or created a whole new one featuring the face of everyone’s favorite webjockey, Milano! Check it out here: http://dangoestonyc.tumblr.com/

If you read this blog and enjoy it, you can leave your parting words to Dan in the comments below!

  • Mom Rap – Lyrics!

You may remember last June we released a Dad Rap just in time for Father’s Day.  But we all know Dads aren’t the only ones who like to get down – Moms can spit rhymes too!  We’ve laid out the lyrics for you:

    Spoken intro:

All right, settle down…settle down… ‘Cuz I said so, that’s why!

    Rhyme:
I’m the M-O-M, here to bust a rhyme out,
So listen up, yo, or I’ll put you in a time out!
I rule the roost, I’m commander in chief,
My to-do list’s longer than War & Peace.
    I do it all, I’m a coach, I’m a nurse.
I got a whole damn drugstore in my mad Mom purse!
Cookin’ mac and cheese, like I’m the Top Chef,
Feedin’ hungry kids like I was UNICEF!
    Rollin’ atcha soccer games, enthusiastic,
Rockin’ mom jeans, lookin’ hella fantastic!
Running mad errands, yo, all over the map.
I’ve changed some diapers, but take no crap!
So sit up straight!  Clean your plate!  No swearing!
Don’t roll your eyes!  Is that what you’re wearing?
You think you’re all bad?  Well, you best be good.
Better watch yo’ booty when Mom’s in da hood!
